At Andrew’s (Andrew & Gerry)
Written by Gerry
Come early evening, Alfric closed up the gates. Zegosh was put into the last cell, still tied and gagged. Alric came in, settled into a chair and lit his pipe. Casi took to the air, off hunting.
Fasha came in with food and then left. Benock came in later, with a pre-fall map, asking Cel where recent events had transpired. Cel pointed to Marde’wapiti ruins (Elkhall) as the location where Zegosh had been found. The Thoroneska ruins (Eagle’s Nest) was the location wherein the Gricks (worms) and grey-skins had been encountered.
Looking at the map, Cel could see that the old elven territorial borders ended along where the east-west road, the Kings Road, was now running. To the north-east of Marde’wapiti, Cel could see another Elven settlement, Telmellamon (Hillcrest). Cel and Benock discussed sending word to Elven forces to inspect the ruins before any human forces entered the site.
Benoch noted that Thoroneska was a last-stand location, defensively sound, that an Elven army could fall back to in order to regroup if needed. The final push in the last war came from there. He also commented that tribalists still lived in Hill Crest. Benoch, leaving, wished Cel well, remarking that he was ‘a good lad’, and that he’d keep an eye on Fasha.
Alfric offered some pipeweed, and told of some recent happenings while the party was away. A small group of the the Kings Hand had come through. Hearing a report of happenings, including the actions and findings of the party, they headed back to Kaisendorf.
During Emilia’s shift she checked that Zegosh wasn’t choking. While adjusting his gag, Emilia noticed that Zeg’s brow was very sweaty under the hood. Emilia thought that she could hear a whisper behind her. Turning, no-one was there. Concentrating, she could hear mumbling, discerning something that sounded like ‘sea’. Retrieving a mug of water, she approached Zegosh. More mumbling, sounding like ‘ercy…’. At that, Zegosh’s head jerked up. Nothing more was heard, and she eventually swapped shifts with Cel.
Following Cel’s shift, Ed and Jaku took over halfway through the night. Casi had returned from his hunt, and was back roosting on the roof. Emilia and Cel retired to the inn. Waking early, before the logging teams left, Cel noted an Elf by the fire, dressed in similar raiment to Cel. He appeared to be readying to head off. Cel went over and introduced himself. The Elf was named Carydion, and Cel recalled seeing him in other cities in the past. He had the attire of a Hostar’en Ovis (Ram), from more mountainous territory to the North-East. Carydion departed.
Breakfast was brought out by Fasha. Durathror was going through his notes. He had a sense that the scroll retrieved when he was rescued was some sort of protection device, a defensive mechanism to create way-lays for the unwary. He looked dishevelled, as if he’d been reading through the night.
Searching for transport, they located a shipment of barrels and partially-processed timber being sent back to Westburg. Offering to provide protection in exchange for transportation, the party headed out that morning.
That evening, the wagon train stopped off at one of the sites that the party had camped at previously. 8 gnomes were there, the same ones that Durathror had met a while ago. They were setting up a permanent site near the river, an inn to get business from travellers. The gnomes had gotten on the wrong side of a contingent of the Hand. After a dispute about taxes, the Hand’s party had taken the wealth of the gnomes, leaving them broke. There were discussions about securing goods for the gnomes to help with establishing their business, to which the gnomes offered a bed whenever the party came through. Once the inn was up and running of course.
The next day, the party resumed their travel. As they left the foothills, they moved into the farmlands around Westburg. People were in the fields, for seed-sowing. Talking with people as they passed, they heard recurring themes – more crops were needed and the Hands had taken more than usual. The party recalled hearing of the bad winter in Eisenhorn.
They continued on, arriving at Westburg, the sun setting ahead of them. Emilia noticed a familiar ship in the bay, in amidst the large number of ships at anchor. Traveling through town, a number of shops appeared to be understocked. They headed on to the Treasury. Finding Nimbreh, the party was escorted into the Grand Hall. The prisoner was to be interrogated….
