At Andrew’s (Andrew, Alex, Gerry, Herb & Daz)
Written by Gerry
Jaku spent 30 minutes at the river, cleansing and praying.
Ed and Casi discussed Casi’s book, along with sleeping, eating and toileting behaviours of Casi’s species. Ed offered space in his room for Casi to sleep in.
Cel asked Mila about being able to speak with Fasha. Directed to the kitchen, Cel found 3 human women wearing leather collars, scarring evident where the metal collars had previously been. Instead of logging, these women were assigned to the kitchen, and ‘other’ duties. Cel saw another elven woman – instead of long hair, it was roughly cut and she wore drab clothing. They talked briefly with Fasha agreeing to speak with Cel after her shift.
Jaku heard wagons approaching. He headed back to town, observing ~20 slaves – a mix of dwarves, humans and a Halfling. They were escorted by free people, and were all following the three wagons full of logs.
The loggers entered the inn for their meals. Food came out to the three long log tables, followed by a minstrel and music. The party listened to the conversation round them, learning of a number of bear attacks about a week ago, just before Durathror was attached, but nothing out of the norm for the time of year. One bear in particular, ‘Old Nelly’ tended to be a problem this time of year. The party also learned the location of the logging site.
Fasha finished her shift, and came over to Cel. Moving to a quieter location, they talked. Fasha recalled hearing wolves the night of the attack on Durathror, mentioning a pack that hunts to the North. While talking Fasha referred to the humans and the settlement as usurpers, and that nature had a way of achieving retribution; the region used to belong to the Southern Elvish nation up until ~300 years ago. Fasha would have been young at the time. Cel got the sense that Fasha had more than a passing dislike of the humans. Fasha had been in Eichenfeld for over 20 years, Mila having taken over the inn from her father.
After Fasha left the inn, Cel followed her from the shadows. Fasha walked into the Bowyer’s house.
The night passed uneventfully, although it sounded like Mila had company that evening.
The next day, the party gathered to break fast, Flynn nowhere in sight. Alfrik, the night watchman, came in. They talked about the area and their plans for the day. Heading off, they took horses and ponies to the ambush site and then turned north to the grove. Hitching their horses, they made their way down the rift to the grove before midday. The wolf carcasses were gone. Investigating the area, they found a number of wolf tracks heading in different directions, and the panther prints heading north.
In the light of day, they could see the tree was no longer alive, but there was some semblance of magical essence at the base of the tree. Lacking the skills to investigate further, they could tell the essence was strongest where the wood was carved. They also noticed a depression around the base of the tree that was still moist – likely from blood.
The party then followed the panther tracks, first north and then turning east. Shortly after, the tracks changed to human prints, and were joined by wolf tracks. Using the wand, Cel still felt no sense of the mask. They continued to follow the tracks along the cliff-line of the delta. After a way, the prints split, heading north and east. The tracks were of wolf and human, those to the north being much older.
Looking north towards the cliff, the party noticed a fallen column, and on inspection found it carved with Elven script. Casi took to the air to scout the area, finding evidence of ruins up above the cliff-line, on the edge of and behind the escarpment. Heading to the cliff-line, they found a small hole at the base of the cliff, just large enough to be crawled through, and appearing to have been dug out by claw. No fresh tracks were evident.
Cel again used the wand, but there was no sense of the mask nearby. Jaku cast light on a stone and threw it in the hole. The light of the rolling stone showed a staircase, ending at a corridor roughly 60’ down.
The party decided to head back to the horses, and Eichenfeld, as the afternoon was getting on. They returned in the evening to find Alfrik at the gate, informing them that Durathror had come in with a caravan earlier that afternoon.
They talked and ate. Mila was giving Cel a dark look, and paying her attention to Flynn. Cel wasn’t bothered, quite happy not being the object of her affections. As per the night before, Fasha left later, noticing the party. Again, she entered the Bowyer’s house without any sign of being surreptitious.
Durathror saw a number of Rock Gnomes, and talked with them. They were heading west.
The party made plans for the next day – they would ride north to the logging site, and then ride north into the rift, and to the underground site they had uncovered; Cel expected that to be quicker than the previous day’s circuitous route. Waking, and eating, the next day, they headed off…
